Happy Birthday David Bowie

David Robert Jones was born on January 8th, 1947, in Brixton, England. In order to avoind confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees he changed his name to David Bowie.
Bowie became an icon of pop culture, influencing music, fashion, production and gender politics. 
He was the first pop star to announce his bisexuality, he wore crazy outfits, he did insane amounts of drugs and he made amazing music. It's impossible to imagine today's pop culture without this man and his fearlessness. Without Bowie there would be no Madonna, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Lady Gaga, Radiohead - to name just a few.

He is often referred to as a rock chameleon, but the thing about chameleons is that they blend into their background, while Bowie has always done just the opposite. 
Bowie hasn't made any new music since 2003, and has pretty much retired from the music business. 

In the fashion world it's become tres-trendy to pay homage to Bowie recently, with big-time names such as Kate Moss posing as Bowie or in Bowie-inspired photos. Here's a sample:
